The tradition of the South Danish coffee table started in the 1870s and became a 'hallmark' of this part of Denmark until 1920.
During this period, Southern Jutland was German territory and there were limited opportunities to gather and be 'Danish'. It was forbidden for the Southern Jutlanders to gather where alcohol was served, because the Prussians believed that it loosened the Danish tongue ties of the Southern Jutlanders.
On the other hand, the Southern Jutlanders were allowed to gather for coffee and cake, and this is how the Southern Jutland coffee table came into being. It quickly developed into a lavish cake orgy, because the Landbokons wanted to outdo each other in baked goods.
